Sharing a message to your story

Turn an anonymous message, and your reply, into an image for your story. What each option does and how to protect the sender.

Answering messages in public is the best way to get more of them. On DropAsecret every message can become an image sized for a story, ready to post on Instagram, WhatsApp, Snapchat or anywhere else.

Making the image

Open a message in your inbox and tap Share. You'll see the image exactly as it will be posted, with your options underneath. When it looks right, tap Share to send it straight to another app, or download it and post it yourself.

Your link goes in the caption, so people who see your story can send you something too.

What the image shows

The image shows the prompt the message was sent to, the message itself, and nothing about who sent it. Then you choose:

  • Include my reply. Show what you said back, under the message. Most people enjoy a story more with the answer than without.
  • Hide my name. With your reply included, label it just "Reply" instead of using your name.
  • Include the picture. If the message came with a picture, choose whether it goes on the image too.
  • Hide my link. The caption points to the site instead of your own page.

Hiding letters

Under the options you'll find the message written out letter by letter. Tap any letter to cover it on the image. Tap again to show it.

Use this for anything that could identify someone:

  • names and nicknames;
  • places, like a school, workplace or street;
  • dates and events only a few people were at;
  • anything about a third person who isn't part of the conversation.

A message that's harmless in your inbox can single someone out once a few hundred people have seen it. If you can't cover enough to make it safe, don't post it.

Long messages

Long messages are split across a series of images instead of being shrunk to fit, so every word stays easy to read. The share screen tells you how many there are. Post them in order: the button moves on to the next one each time you share, and you can save them all at once.

If your reply doesn't fit under a long message, it gets an image of its own, with the start of the message above it so people know what you're answering.

What to share, and what not to

Good to share:

  • funny messages and your best comebacks;
  • kind messages, as a thank you;
  • questions lots of people would like the answer to;
  • the best roasts, if you asked to be roasted.

Better kept private:

  • anything someone told you in confidence;
  • messages about their struggles, their health or their safety;
  • anything mean. Posting cruelty gives it the audience its sender wanted. Delete it, block the sender if needed, and move on.

Sharing your link, not a message

To share your link on its own, use the share sheet in your inbox. Where to share your link goes through each app. You can also share your results when a poll ends; see Drops and polls.

Get your own anonymous link

Share it, get anonymous messages, reply without knowing who sent them, and reveal only when you both want to. It takes about a minute.
